Life
Emperor Guan is known as Guan Yu who lived during the Three Kingdoms period. Guan Yu belonged to the group who aspired to restore the Han Dynasty. He had met two other persons with the same ideal; Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. They became sworn brothers at the Peach Garden and vowed to work together towards the revival of the Han Dynasty. Liu Bei was the eldest of the three brothers; Guan Yu was the second brother and Zhang Fei the youngest. As a General, Guan Yu was well known for this integrity, and bravery. As an individual, he was respected for his loyalty and righteousness. During a battle with Wu forces, Guan Yu was captured and beheaded. After Emperor Guan passed away, people built temples to worship him. People viewed him as a saint, a role model, the god of warfare, the god of literature, and the god of wealth.

關聖帝君即三國時代關羽。為人至忠至義，謹守禮節。年輕時結識了劉備和張飛，三人桃園結義，成為異姓兄弟。關羽從此終生不改初衷，至死不渝，追隨劉備出生入死，成為蜀漢大將，威震華夏，義貫千秋。而關羽在樊城之戰被東吳俘殺。後人為了表彰關羽的忠義守節，建廟祭祀。舊時，關聖帝君被視為神通廣大的神靈而受到各階層的廣泛崇祀。廣大群眾以其信義耿介，奉之為驅邪除惡、扶正保民的大神；士人以其忠義正直，奉之為道德偶像；將士以其神武善戰，奉之為克敵制勝的軍神；商賈又奉之為招財進寶的福神。
關羽為保護劉備的二位夫人，曾被迫降曹。他坦誠的告訴曹操，自己曾受過劉備的厚恩，曾發誓要同生死，這是不能背叛的，所以自己最終還是要去找劉備。
為讓關羽亂君臣之禮，曹操讓關羽與二位嫂子共居一室。關羽於是便自己整晚手持蠟燭站在門外，通宵達旦的一心讀《春秋》，沒有絲毫倦意。
曹操拜關羽為偏將軍，待以厚禮，贈給他很多金銀財寶、綾羅綢緞。關羽封存起來，一點都沒有用。曹操送給關羽一所府宅居住，關羽將一宅分為兩院，內宅嫂子居住，由老兵把守，自己則獨居外宅，只是三天一次在內宅門外躬身施禮，向兩位嫂子請安問好。曹操派眾多美女前去服侍，關羽便讓那些美女都去服侍兩位嫂子了。
曹操見關羽身上穿的綠錦戰袍已經舊了，便立即贈送了他一件新的。關羽卻把它穿到了衣服裏面，外面依舊穿著舊戰袍。曹操笑他何必如此儉樸？關羽說：「我這並不是儉樸，這件舊袍是劉備所賜，我穿在身上就好像見到了兄長的面一樣。我不敢授受了丞相新賜的戰袍，就忘了兄長舊賜的戰袍，所以還是把舊袍穿在了外面。」
曹操知道了關羽是個至忠至義之人，也不由的敬重他。在知道了劉備的下落後，關羽留下所受的封賞，掛印留書告辭而去，繼續追隨劉備南征北戰。
