History

The An-Lan Temple was previously known as the Matsu Temple, after the Matsu deity. Since AD 1757, the temple adhered to a simple design, conservative in decoration and expression. The first major remodelling took place in AD 1894, when local gentry Chen Zhonghe launched a massive refurbishment, which included renovation and redecoration. Completing measures of assurance, the man of great social standing had garnered public support and sponsorships. After warfare in Taiwan erupted, the An-Lan Temple suffered. The crumbling of the foundation of the place of worship led to discussions and debates between local residents. After five years, repair work began. As the size of the temple increased, and the quality of said temple followed similarly, the population of believers increased as well. Incense seemed to proliferate. The smoke and signs of life were always present. However, the establishment of an oil refinery nearby threatened the safety of both the temple and the people. The possibility of an explosion loomed over the heads of all those involved. Following protocal, all local residents moved out. Fortuneately, a donation of 400 ping land was made in honor of the temple. 1 ping is a unit of area equal to 3.3 square meters. Further repairs and renovations took three years to complete. The temple after all the refurbishments is the one still standing today.
